Heroic Rescue Prevents Tragedy After Crash at Railroad Tracks in Columbus

MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA — On September 9, 2025, a near tragedy was averted after a crash on Macon Road near Garrett Road left a vehicle stranded on the railroad tracks at Ingrillis Road. The driver of that vehicle was the father of Deputy Marcus Street.
According to officials, the vehicle was struck from behind at approximately 80 mph, forcing it onto the tracks. Off-duty Sergeant Earl Osbon witnessed the crash and immediately rushed to help. While the passenger was able to be safely removed, the driver remained trapped and injured. A nurse on scene advised not to move him until paramedics arrived.
Sgt. Osbon attempted to alert the railroad company as a train was quickly approaching, but when those efforts failed, he made the critical decision to pull the driver from the vehicle. Fighting against the steep incline and a door that wouldn’t stay open, Sgt. Osbon lifted the driver while two good Samaritans, Tyler Routen and Bobby Gray, assisted by carrying his legs.
Just moments after they moved him to safety, the train struck the vehicle. Sgt. Osbon fell during the effort but ensured the driver remained unharmed.
Deputy Street’s father was transported to the hospital and has since been released.
Sheriff’s officials praised Sgt. Osbon’s quick thinking and bravery, along with the courage of the two citizens who stepped in. “Thanks to Sgt. Osbon’s selfless actions and the assistance of Mr. Routen and Mr. Gray, a possible tragedy was prevented,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “This is what being a part of the MCSO family is all about.”
