Georgia Woman Sentenced to 30 Years for Stealing 0K from Elderly Mother
Vickie Long

On March 6, 2025, Vickie Long entered a non-negotiated guilty plea to one count of exploiting an elder person, one count of identity fraud, and one count of theft by taking, in a case involving her own mother.

Evidence presented in court showed that Long convinced her elderly mother to give her large sums of money by falsely claiming she needed treatment for cancer. After Adult Protective Services and family members intervened to stop the voluntary payments, Long began using her mother’s personal information to withdraw money from her bank accounts without permission.

Detective Daniel Thacker with the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the financial abuse after being notified, and law enforcement later determined that most of the stolen money was used to purchase fentanyl.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Zachary Trippe. On April 30, 2025, Judge Melissa Gifford Hise sentenced Long to 30 years, with the first 15 to be served in prison.

The victim lost nearly $200,000 and her home due to the fraud.
