Carrollton Man Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Kidnapping, Assault of Girlfriend

CARROLLTON, Ga. – A 58-year-old Carrollton man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury convicted him of kidnapping and family violence battery in connection with a 2025 attack on his girlfriend.

A Carroll County jury found Ted Walter Welborn, 58, guilty on Aug. 13 of Kidnapping with Bodily Injury and Family Violence Battery, according to West Georgia Judicial Circuit District Attorney Sarah Stimac Japour.

Welborn received the statutorily mandated sentence of life without the possibility of parole. Judge John Simpson presided over the case.

The prosecution stemmed from an Oct. 23, 2025, domestic violence incident at the victim’s residence in Carrollton.

According to evidence presented at trial, Carrollton Police officers responded after the woman called 911 and reported that her boyfriend had assaulted her.

When officers arrived, they found furniture inside the residence in disarray and observed a visible injury to the woman’s face.

Investigators then reviewed footage captured by the victim’s doorbell camera. Prosecutors said the video showed the woman attempting to leave the residence following the initial assault.

Welborn followed her outside, grabbed her by the upper body and physically dragged her back into the residence, according to evidence presented to the jury. Prosecutors said Welborn then threw the woman to the floor, causing additional injuries.

Prosecutors Cite Eight Prior Felony Convictions

Following the guilty verdict, prosecutors presented evidence during the sentencing hearing showing that Welborn had previously been convicted of felony offenses on eight separate occasions.

The jury’s conviction on the kidnapping and family violence battery charges resulted in Welborn receiving life without parole.

Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Grady Moore prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Carrollton Police Department.

The West Georgia Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office credited Carrollton police for their work on the investigation and said the office remains focused on prosecuting violent repeat offenders.
