Brookdale Resource Center Harvests Over 8 Tons of Fresh Produce for Residents
Since its first seeds were planted on April 11, 2023, the Gardens at Brookdale have yielded over 8 tons of fresh produce, feeding residents of the Brookdale Resource Center and transforming lives in the community.
The lush gardens have provided an abundance of fresh vegetables, including tomatoes, sweet potatoes, peppers, peas, and more. Managed by Susan Fisher, the initiative surpassed expectations during its second year, with volunteers and community groups rallying together to support the cause.
“Our second year at Brookdale surpassed my expectations, not just in the quantity of food we produced but also in the incredible support from volunteers and various community groups,” Fisher said. “Through the hands-on classes we conducted, we educated people on growing their own food while spreading awareness about Brookdale. It has truly been and continues to be a collaborative team effort in every way!”
In 2023, the gardens produced an impressive 4,230 pounds of fresh food. This year, the harvest totaled 3,965 pounds, all of which were turned into nutritious meals by the center’s chefs for residents in need.
“I am so proud of how this project has grown – literally,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “This started off as an idea and has evolved into something so special and beneficial for so many people in our community.”
The Bibb County Cooperative Extension continues to offer opportunities for volunteers to assist in the gardens while learning valuable gardening techniques.
