GBI Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Cobb County, One Man Dead, Two Officers Injured

At the request of the Cobb County Police Department, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred late Friday night, September 27, 2024. One man died in the incident, and two officers from the Smyrna Police Department were shot and injured.

Preliminary reports indicate that at approximately 11:45 p.m., officers from the Smyrna Police Department responded to Adventure Outdoors, located at 2500 S. Cobb Drive, regarding a burglary in progress. Upon arrival, officers were met by an employee who informed them that someone was inside the business. When officers made contact with a man and asked him to come outside, he initially complied but then attempted to escape.

As officers attempted to place him under arrest, the man fled and began firing a rifle that was slung around his neck, striking two Smyrna officers in the leg. Three Cobb County police officers arrived just before the shooting began and returned fire, fatally wounding the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured officers were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Cobb County SWAT was deployed to clear the business of any other occupants. The identity of the deceased man has not yet been released, and his body will be sent to the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation into the incident, and once completed, the case file will be submitted to the Cobb District Attorney’s Office for review.
