Officer-Involved Shooting Leaves Austell Man Dead After Standoff in Cobb County

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A 43-year-old Austell man was shot and killed following an officer-involved shooting and lengthy standoff with police late Friday night in Cobb County, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The GBI said it was requested by the Cobb County Police Department to investigate the incident, which resulted in the death of Gregory Hill Jr., 43, of Austell. No officers were injured.

Preliminary information indicates that at about 10:22 p.m. on June 5, a Cobb County police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Hill. Authorities said Hill fled from the officer and later crashed near the intersection of Windy Hill Road and Osborne Court.

According to the GBI, officers approached the crashed vehicle at approximately 10:24 p.m. when Hill allegedly fired shots at them. Officers returned fire toward Hill before backing away from the vehicle.

The Cobb County Police Department SWAT team was called to assist as Hill remained barricaded inside the vehicle. Police attempted to negotiate with Hill for about an hour and a half, authorities said.

The GBI reported that Hill later displayed a gun, prompting a Cobb County police officer to fire toward him. Hill was struck at least once and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hill’s body will be transported to the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The GBI investigation remains ongoing.
