Cobb County Deputies Seize 25 Pounds of Fentanyl Worth $1.65 Million During Drug Investigation
COBB COUNTY, Ga. — More than 25 pounds of fentanyl with an estimated street value of $1.65 million has been seized following a month-long narcotics investigation in Cobb County, according to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.
The seizure was announced Wednesday, June 10, by the Sheriff’s Office, which said members of its Narcotics Unit recovered approximately 11.43 kilograms of fentanyl and a firearm during a traffic stop in Cobb County.
Authorities described the seizure as a significant disruption to the illegal drug trade and a major step in preventing potentially deadly narcotics from reaching communities.
According to data from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, as little as 2 milligrams of fentanyl is considered a potentially lethal dose for an average adult. Based on that measurement, investigators said the amount seized contained enough potentially lethal doses to kill approximately 5.7 million people.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Law enforcement officials warn that illegally manufactured fentanyl is frequently mixed into heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and counterfeit prescription pills, often without the user’s knowledge.
Because of its potency, even a small amount can result in a fatal overdose.
Officials said the operation was the result of coordinated efforts among the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit, Organized Crime Unit intelligence personnel, K-9 teams and supporting units.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release information about any arrests connected to the investigation.
Authorities continue to warn residents about the dangers of fentanyl and encourage anyone struggling with substance abuse to seek treatment and support services.
