GBI Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Clayton County

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on February 25, 2025, in Jonesboro, GA, at the request of the Clayton County Police Department. During the incident, 21-year-old Daniel Neal was shot and injured, and one officer was also shot.  

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 5:45 p.m., Clayton County Sheriff’s Office deputies attempted to arrest Neal for a recent aggravated assault. Neal fled in a vehicle, and deputies followed him to a residence on Summer Chase Drive, where a standoff ensued.  

Clayton County SWAT officers responded and attempted to negotiate Neal’s surrender, but he refused to comply. Several hours later, officers entered the home to search for Neal. He emerged from a hiding place and fired at officers. Officers returned fire, striking Neal multiple times. One officer was also shot during the exchange.  

Officers provided medical aid to Neal and the injured officer, and both were transported to a local hospital. The officer is in stable condition, and Neal is in critical condition.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation, and upon completion, the case will be submitted to the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
