Lightning Strike Sparks Fire at Washington County Assisted Living Facility

TENNILLE, Ga. — Emergency personnel and facility staff safely evacuated all residents from an assisted living facility on North Main Street after a suspected lightning strike sparked a fire at the building, authorities reported.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. when 911 dispatchers received reports of a fire at the Tennille Assisted Living Facility in Washington County. Responding first responders observed smoke and flames inside the structure upon arrival.

Rapid Evacuation and Fire Suppression

Fire departments from several surrounding area stations rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze within minutes of arrival.

Facility staff and responding emergency personnel executed a swift evacuation of the building, removing all residents from danger and preventing any injuries. The building sustained fire, smoke, and moderate water damage during the incident and suppression efforts. All residents were subsequently reunited with their respective families following the evacuation.

Weather Cause and Sheriff Statement

Preliminary reports suggest that the fire was triggered by a lightning strike during a storm that was passing through the area at the time.
