Paulding County Sheriff’s Office Mourns Loss of SWAT Doctor

The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of Doctor Gregory L. Wehunt, affectionately known as “Doc,” who passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 10, 2025, at the age of 75.
Doc’s journey began in Powder Springs, where he graduated from McEachern High School before earning a pharmacy degree from Mercer University in 1972. After six years as a pharmacist and owner of Gregg’s Pharmacy in downtown Dallas, an aviation tragedy in 1977 profoundly inspired him to pursue medicine. Motivated by the desire to help others, he sold his pharmacy and graduated with a Doctor of Osteopathy degree in 1982 from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.
After internships and short stints in Michigan and Kentucky, Doc returned to Paulding County, where he dedicated his career to serving the medical needs of the community. He ran a private practice until 2009, earning the endearing nickname “Doc” from those he cared for. Post-retirement, he continued his service as the medical doctor for the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, including its SWAT team, demonstrating a tireless commitment to law enforcement and the community.
Sheriff Ashley Henson praised Doc’s unparalleled contributions, stating that his compassionate nature and dedication left an indelible mark on both the department and Paulding County.
