Explosion Risk Prompts Evacuations After High-Pressure Gas Leak Detected in Downtown Atlanta

The Atlanta Fire and Rescue Department (AFRD) is currently responding to a high-pressure gas leak after construction crews accidentally struck a main gas line approximately five feet underground. Authorities have issued a warning for the public to avoid the area due to the potential explosion risk.

Evacuations have been implemented for the surrounding area, including the State Capitol and Washington Presbyterian Church daycare. MARTA buses are on site to transport children from the daycare to safe locations for pickup by their parents.

Residents in the area may smell gas due to strong winds, but authorities have assured that there is no immediate cause for concern at this time. The gas company involved has reported that they expect to have the situation under control within the next 2-3 hours.

MARTA’s East/West Line is temporarily shut down, and several key intersections are closed, including:

  • Courtland at MLK
  • Decatur at Washington
  • MLK at 75/85
  • Piedmont/Trinity to Decatur Street

Public safety officials are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents to stay clear of the affected areas. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
