Rosa Parks Square Renovations Kick Off with Groundbreaking Ceremony in Macon

Rosa Parks Square, the largest greenspace in Downtown Macon, is set to undergo significant renovations, celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, September 19.

Mayor Lester Miller emphasized the collaborative effort behind the project, stating, “It’s a great day in Macon-Bibb County. I get to stand here with you, beside you, to celebrate how we worked together to create something great.”

The renovations aim to transform the park not just physically but also as a renewed commitment to equality and social justice. Andrea Cooke, Chair of the Friends of Rosa Parks Square Board, highlighted the park’s importance: “This is not just about a physical transformation… We have come a long way.”

Originally named during Mayor C. Jack Ellis’ administration to honor the “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement,” Rosa Parks Square has a rich history. Under Mayor Robert Reichert, the park’s area was doubled, solidifying its role as a community focal point.

Alex Morrison, Executive Director of the Urban Development Authority, noted the park’s intended use for events and gatherings, including protests. The Friends of Rosa Parks Square Board has worked tirelessly since its formation in 2019 to enhance the park’s appeal and functionality.

This year, the Commission allocated $2.5 million for renovations, which will include additional seating, a stage, picnic tables, a memorial wall, and improved lighting. Stafford Builders & Consultants, Inc. has been approved as the contractor for the project.

Walter Stafford of Stafford Builders expressed pride in being part of such a significant initiative, stating, “To be here standing in Rosa Parks’ honor to support something like this in our community, it means a very big deal to me.”

Demolition at the park is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with renovations slated for completion by Spring 2025. Mayor Miller concluded with a quote from Rosa Parks, reaffirming the community’s commitment to the project and the upcoming transformation of the park.
