Athens Elderly Moped Rider Dies Weeks After Collision

ATHENS, Ga. — An Athens man has died nearly three weeks after he was seriously injured in a traffic crash involving a moped and a passenger vehicle, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:06 p.m. on June 12 at the intersection of Lexington Road and East Meadow Drive.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2025 moped operated by 66-year-old David Engel of Athens was traveling westbound on Lexington Road while a red 2014 Honda Accord was traveling eastbound.

Investigators said the Honda attempted to turn left onto East Meadow Drive when the moped struck the vehicle’s front passenger-side door.

The impact ejected Engel from the moped.

He was transported by EMS to a local hospital with suspected serious injuries.

On July 1, investigators learned that Engel had died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Police said the death marks the sixth traffic fatality in Athens-Clarke County in 2026.

The crash remains under investigation.
