Former Athens-Clarke County Tag Office Employee Arrested on 31 Felony Charges in Fraud Investigation
ATHENS, Ga. – A former Athens-Clarke County Tag Office employee has been arrested on more than 30 felony charges following an investigation into alleged fraudulent activity at the government office, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
Police identified the former employee as Lilia Lozano, 54, of Athens.
Investigators obtained arrest warrants for Lozano following an investigation into activity at the Athens-Clarke County Tag Office. She was arrested on Aug. 18.
Lozano faces 31 felony charges, including:
- One count of Felony Theft by Taking
- 10 counts of Forgery in the Second Degree
- 10 counts of Identity Fraud
- 10 counts of False Statements
Police have not disclosed the amount of money or property allegedly taken or explained how the suspected scheme operated.
Authorities also have not released details about whose identities were allegedly used, what documents investigators believe were forged, or when the alleged offenses occurred.
The Athens-Clarke County Tag Office handles vehicle registration and title-related services for county residents.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department said the case remains under investigation, indicating detectives are continuing to examine the alleged fraudulent activity.
Police have not said whether investigators believe other individuals were involved or whether additional arrests or charges are anticipated.
