Athens Police Officer Shoots Armed Man During North Avenue Disturbance

ATHENS, Ga. – An Athens-Clarke County police officer shot a man Monday afternoon after responding to a disturbance involving a person reportedly armed with a bladed weapon, authorities said.

Officers with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded at approximately 4:23 p.m. on July 27 to the 400 block of North Avenue following reports of a disturbance.

According to police, officers encountered a subject who was brandishing a bladed weapon. During the incident, at least one officer fired their service weapon, striking the individual.

The injured man was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, where he was being treated for his injuries.

No officers were injured during the incident.

In accordance with department policy, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an independent criminal investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will also conduct a concurrent administrative review of the incident.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
