Savannah Man Arrested After Pointing Gun at Police Officers, Prompting Shooting

SAVANNAH, Ga. – A 47-year-old Savannah man was arrested after police officers opened fire when he allegedly pointed a handgun at them during a response to a domestic-related call Monday morning, Oct. 5, 2026, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The GBI identified the suspect as Tyrel Javon Morgan, 47, of Savannah, who was charged with one count of aggravated assault.
No one was injured during the officer-involved shooting.
According to preliminary information released by the GBI, the incident began around 11:44 a.m. when Chatham County 911 received a call from a woman reporting that her ex-boyfriend was outside her home with a pistol.
Savannah Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Gwinnett Street.
When officers arrived, they began searching the area for the man, later identified as Morgan.
Officers located Morgan holding a firearm and ordered him to drop the weapon, investigators said.
According to the GBI, Morgan pointed the gun toward the responding officers, prompting them to fire their weapons.
Morgan was not struck by the gunfire, and no officers or bystanders were injured.
Following the confrontation, Morgan was taken into custody and booked into the Chatham County Jail.
Authorities have not disclosed how many officers fired their weapons, how many shots were fired or whether Morgan discharged his firearm.
GBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting
The Savannah Police Department requested an independent investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation following the incident.
GBI agents are examining the circumstances surrounding the initial 911 call, the confrontation on East Gwinnett Street and the officers’ decision to discharge their firearms.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
