Newton County Deputies Respond to Barricaded Suspect; Man Dies From Self-Inflicted Gunshot

COVINGTON, Ga. — A man is dead following a barricaded suspect situation Thursday night after Newton County deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a Covington residence.

According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to a home on Riverbrook Trail at approximately 8 p.m. on February 26, 2026, to serve an outstanding warrant.

When deputies made contact with the suspect, he barricaded himself inside the residence. Deputies secured the surrounding area and activated the agency’s SWAT Team along with a trained crisis negotiator.

Law enforcement personnel worked for roughly five hours attempting to peacefully resolve the situation.

Authorities said that just prior to SWAT officers entering the home, the suspect sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

No deputies or members of the public were injured during the incident.

The investigation remains active, and additional details have not yet been released.
