COVINGTON, Georgia – A Newton County jury convicted a former deputy Thursday on three counts of violation of oath by a public officer stemming from conduct prosecutors said occurred while he was on duty and in uniform in 2023.

According to the Newton County District Attorney’s Office, George Rahming was found guilty May 21 following a jury trial.

Prosecutors said the charges were based on Rahming committing the offense of sexual contact by an employee in the first degree, solicitation of sodomy, and using his position while on duty to buy condoms, transport the victim to a secluded location, solicit sexual acts, and engage in sexual intercourse.

Investigators said the incident began after Rahming pulled his patrol vehicle alongside a woman walking on the roadside under the pretense of offering assistance.

Following the verdict, the court held a sentencing hearing. Authorities said the judge sentenced Rahming to 15 years, with the first seven years to be served in prison, along with additional conditions.

The investigation began after hospital staff contacted law enforcement when the victim disclosed the allegations, prosecutors said.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office initially responded and interviewed the victim before obtaining surveillance footage from a gas station. Investigators later determined the suspect was a deputy, prompting Sheriff Ezell Brown to request the Georgia Bureau of Investigation take over the investigation.

District Attorney Randy McGinley said the conviction reflected the actions of one individual and not law enforcement as a whole.

“This conviction does not serve as a statement against law enforcement, but against one person, this Defendant, who used his authority and power for improper purposes,” McGinley said.
