Driver Flees Traffic Stop, Crashes With Woman and 3-Month-Old Baby in SUV in Macon

MACON, Ga. – A driver accused of speeding more than 30 mph over the limit fled from a Bibb County deputy and crashed into a tree with a woman and 3-month-old infant inside the SUV, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Cpl. Dalton Palmer with the Sheriff’s Office H.E.A.T. Unit stopped the driver of a Nissan Rogue on Forest Hill Road after the vehicle was clocked traveling 31 mph over the posted speed limit.

The driver initially pulled over.

As Palmer approached the Nissan, he saw a woman and an infant in the back seat, according to an incident report.

During the traffic stop, the driver suddenly sped away.

The Nissan subsequently struck a tree, and the driver got out and ran from the scene on foot, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Rather than chase the fleeing driver, Palmer remained at the crashed vehicle to check on the woman and infant.

Palmer called for an ambulance so the 3-month-old child could receive medical attention. The Sheriff’s Office did not provide information about whether the infant or woman suffered any injuries.

Investigators later determined that the driver did not have a valid driver’s license, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies also reported finding illegal drugs and weapons inside the Nissan.

The Sheriff’s Office did not identify the driver, specify what drugs or weapons were recovered, or say whether the driver had been taken into custody.
