Man Killed After Attacking Savannah Officers During Morning Encounter

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is examining an officer-involved shooting that left a Savannah man dead and two police officers injured Tuesday morning.

According to the GBI, agents were requested by the Savannah Police Department to investigate the incident, which occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. on June 23rd near the intersection of East Victory Drive and Bull Street.

Preliminary information indicates two Savannah police officers were on patrol when they observed 35-year-old Nicholaus Oxendine near a closed business. Officers stopped to question Oxendine while investigating the situation.

During the encounter, authorities said Oxendine allegedly attacked one of the officers.

Investigators said Oxendine then attempted to attack the second officer, who discharged his weapon, striking Oxendine and ending the confrontation.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and transported Oxendine to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Both officers involved in the incident sustained minor injuries during the altercation. They were treated at an area hospital and later released.

The GBI said Oxendine’s body will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler, where an autopsy will be performed.

As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings across Georgia, the GBI will conduct an independent investigation into the incident. Once completed, the case file will be turned over to the appropriate prosecutor for review.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
