DOUGLAS, Georgia – A Coffee County jail employee has been arrested following an investigation into alleged illegal activity inside the county jail.

According to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, investigators with the Criminal Investigation Division arrested 24-year-old Imari Bailey on June 1 after an extensive investigation into contraband being brought into the jail.

Authorities said Bailey had been employed as a jailer for approximately six months.

Investigators allege Bailey smuggled contraband into the jail, violating her oath of office and committing multiple felony offenses.

Bailey has been charged with:

  • Violation of Oath by a Public Officer (OCGA 42-4-13)
  • Providing Contraband to an Inmate (OCGA 42-5-18)
  • Guard Lines and Jail Violations (OCGA 16-10-1)

Officials said additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues. Each alleged occurrence is considered a felony offense under Georgia law.

Sheriff Fred Cole said employees are informed from the start of their employment about the consequences of violating department policies and the law.

According to the sheriff’s office, Sheriff Cole tells new hires during orientation that any employee who violates their oath, introduces contraband into the jail, or engages in inappropriate relationships with inmates will face criminal charges and incarceration.

The sheriff’s office stated that while it is impossible to know a person’s intentions when they are hired, the agency remains committed to maintaining accountability, integrity, professionalism, and public trust. Officials added that swift action will be taken whenever those standards are violated.

The investigation remains ongoing.
