Sumter County Detention Officer Arrested in Ongoing Jail Contraband Investigation

SUMTER COUNTY, Ga. — A detention officer with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested following an investigation into contraband smuggling inside the county jail, authorities announced.

According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation began after jail staff conducted a search of the facility on April 21, 2026.

During the search, deputies confiscated numerous contraband items, including cell phones, cigarettes, and homemade weapons designed for stabbing or poking, officials said.

Following the operation, the sheriff’s investigative unit launched an inquiry that remains active.

Investigators said the investigation led to the arrest of Javian Quintrell Blake, a detention officer employed by the sheriff’s office.

Authorities allege Blake purchased cell phones and cigarettes before smuggling them into the jail in exchange for profit.

Officials said additional arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

The sheriff’s office noted that contraband items inside detention facilities create dangerous conditions and can allow inmates to continue criminal activity while incarcerated.

Authorities cited Georgia law prohibiting inmates and others from possessing or procuring banned items inside correctional facilities, noting the offense carries a mandatory 10-year sentence upon conviction.

Sheriff’s officials said maintaining the safety and security of both jail staff and inmates remains a top priority as the investigation moves forward.
