Former Greene County Special Education Director, Husband Accused of Stealing $50,000 in Grant Funds

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – A former Greene County Board of Education administrator and her husband have been arrested after investigators say they were involved in the theft of approximately $50,000 in grant money.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Kimberley Kerchelle Simmons, 52, and her husband, Eric Geroy Simmons, 58, both of Milledgeville.

Kimberley Simmons, the former director of special education for the Greene County Board of Education, is charged with theft by taking and making false statements. Eric Simmons is charged with theft by taking.

The investigation began July 24 after the Greene County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to investigate allegations that Kimberley Simmons had stolen money from the school system.

According to preliminary information released by the GBI, investigators determined that both Kimberley and Eric Simmons were involved in the theft of approximately $50,000 in grant funds.

Authorities have not disclosed what the grant money was intended to fund, how investigators believe the money was taken or how long the suspected theft occurred.

Kimberley Simmons resigned from the Greene County Board of Education on Wednesday, Sept. 2, two days before the GBI announced the arrests.

Both were booked into the Greene County Jail.
