Deputies Euthanize Injured Bear After Vehicle Strike in Pickens County

PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies in Pickens County euthanized a severely injured bear Tuesday morning after the animal was struck by a vehicle near Highway 108 and Eaton Road, according to authorities.

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to the area at approximately 7:16 a.m. on May 12, 2026, following reports of a bear hit by a vehicle.

When deputies arrived, they found the bear suffering from what authorities described as severe injuries.

Officials said deputies contacted the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for guidance on how to handle the situation. At the direction of DNR, deputies used a rifle to humanely euthanize the animal.

According to the sheriff’s office, the bear began convulsing after the initial shot, requiring a second shot to end the animal’s suffering.

Authorities noted that wounded wild animals can become unpredictable and dangerous, particularly in areas near homes and roadways.

At DNR’s request, the bear’s remains were left at the scene for later collection by wildlife personnel.

The sheriff’s office said deputies acted in accordance with DNR guidance to humanely end the animal’s suffering.
