Suspicious Object Investigation Closes Middle Georgia Regional Airport
MACON, Ga. — Authorities temporarily closed the Middle Georgia Regional Airport Tuesday morning after deputies and bomb detection canines discovered a suspicious object inside a secure area of the airport, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
The Macon-Bibb Emergency 911 Center received notification of the incident at approximately 8:21 a.m.
Officials said patrol deputies and members of the sheriff’s office Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bomb Unit were conducting a sweep of the evacuated airport when canines alerted to a suspicious object inside a secured section of the facility at Middle Georgia Regional Airport, located at 1000 Terminal Drive.
Authorities said the Bomb Unit secured the object for examination.
No injuries have been reported, and officials stated there were no patrons inside the airport when the object was discovered.
The airport remains closed while the investigation continues, according to authorities.
UPDATE: During a sweep of an evacuated Middle Georgia Regional Airport, Patrol Deputies and the E.O.D. Bomb Unit canines detected a suspicious object inside of a vending machine inside a secure area. The Bomb Squad secured the object for examination. After the thorough sweep of the Airport, and further investigation, no hazardous devices were detected.
There were no injuries reported at this location, and no staff or patrons were inside the airport when this object was found.
The Middle Georgia Regional Airport has been re-opened at the close of the investigation.
