Rockdale Deputies Involved in Shooting During Mental Health Crisis Call, GBI Investigating
ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing a deputy-involved shooting in Rockdale County after deputies encountered what the sheriff described as a life-threatening situation during a mental health-related call.
The incident happened the evening of April 18, 2026, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Eric Levett said deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation and use the least amount of force possible, but circumstances escalated, leading deputies to use their firearms.
Authorities have not released details about the person who was shot, the circumstances leading up to the shooting, or whether anyone was injured or killed.
In keeping with standard protocol, the GBI is conducting an independent investigation.
The deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which officials said is a routine step.
“We will continue to remain transparent throughout this investigation,” Sheriff Eric Levett said in a statement.
Levett also emphasized the challenges law enforcement faces when responding to mental health crises and encouraged the public to seek treatment and resources for loved ones experiencing mental health emergencies.
The sheriff’s office said mental health staff are available to help connect residents with resources.
Authorities said they are limited in what information can be released while the GBI investigation remains active.
