A man who allegedly stole a license plate was apprehended by Sandy Springs Police after officers tracked the plate to his vehicle parked in a rather conspicuous location: the parking lot of the city’s NEW POLICE HEADQUARTERS.

On Monday, April 14, 2025, officers responded to a 911 call from a resident reporting his license plate stolen. After generating a report and entering the stolen plate information into the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC), officers utilized the city’s Flock camera system to search for the tag. The system identified the stolen plate attached to a different vehicle in the area of Morgan Falls Road.

Patrol, Street Crimes, and Traffic units converged on the location and discovered the suspect, later identified as Amir Smith, hiding inside his vehicle in the parking lot of the Sandy Springs Police Headquarters. Smith was taken into custody without incident. Further investigation revealed that Smith also had an outstanding warrant from Sandy Springs for probation violation.

When questioned about his choice of hiding spot, Smith reportedly stated it was “random” and close to his home.

The Sandy Springs Police Department humorously noted the irony of the situation, stating, “This gives a new meaning to ‘Hiding In Plain Sight’.”
