Georgia Fire Commissioner Urges Safety After Juvenile-Set Cornelia House Fire

Following a residential fire in Cornelia determined to have been intentionally set by a juvenile, Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King is reminding Georgians of the importance of practicing fire safety precautions.
On Monday, March 24th, investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office were called in by the Cornelia Fire Department to investigate a house fire. Their investigation revealed moderate fire damage confined to a bedroom, including damage to the carpet, walls, and children’s toys. The fire was classified as incendiary, linked to the actions of a juvenile. No injuries were reported in the incident.
“Fire safety begins at home,” said Commissioner King. “Taking a few moments to discuss fire prevention can mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy. Check your smoke alarms, plan a fire escape route, and practice fire safety drills to keep you and your family safe.”
Commissioner King emphasized the importance of educating children about the dangers of fire and keeping items like matches and lighters out of their reach, preferably in locked storage.
He also provided the following top fire safety tips for all Georgians:
- Check Smoke Alarms: Ensure working smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and near sleeping areas. Test them at least monthly.
- Create and Practice a Fire Escape Plan: Develop a home fire escape plan with two escape routes from each room. Designate a safe meeting place outside the home.
- Practice Home Fire Drills: Conduct fire drills with your family at least twice a year, during both daytime and nighttime hours. Practice safe escape methods and aim to evacuate in under two minutes.
