21 Indicted in Mitchell County for PPP Loan Fraud

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced today that 21 individuals have been indicted in Mitchell County for allegedly defrauding the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). Prosecutors allege that each defendant falsely claimed ownership of a business and submitted fabricated financial information to obtain loans.
Each defendant received at least one loan of $20,833, with some obtaining a second loan. The total amount allegedly fraudulently received is $604,157. The Attorney General’s White Collar and Cyber Crime Unit presented evidence to a Mitchell County Grand Jury on January 8, 2025, resulting in 13 separate indictments.

The PPP, established under the CARES Act, was designed to help small businesses retain employees during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prosecutors allege that these individuals misused the program by fraudulently securing loans intended for struggling businesses.
“These individuals took advantage of a program meant to support honest business owners,” said Attorney General Chris Carr. “We will continue to hold those accountable who defraud taxpayers and take money away from those who truly needed it.”
The case remains under investigation.
