Hoax Call Leads to False Homicide and Suicide Report in Carrollton

On January 20, 2025, at approximately 1:34 a.m., the Carrollton Police Department responded to multiple emergency calls reporting violent incidents at 200 Bledsoe Street, Apartment G-5. The initial claims, which included reports of a homicide and a suicide, were later determined to be part of a targeted hoax.

The first call came from an unknown male who claimed to have shot his mother. The call was transferred to 911, and officers were immediately dispatched to the location. Shortly before officers arrived, 911 dispatchers informed them that the male caller had threatened suicide and was reportedly holding a gun to his head.

Due to the severity of the situation, multiple units of the Carrollton Police Department were sent to the scene. Officers forcibly entered Apartment G-5 to ensure the safety of any potential victims. Upon clearing the apartment, they found no signs of a crime or a suicidal individual.

Concerned that the caller may have provided incorrect information, officers expanded their search to nearby buildings and apartments on Bledsoe Street. Assistance from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia State Patrol was requested.

One apartment, D-5 at 210 Bledsoe Street, became a focus of concern when officers were unable to make contact with the residents. After confirming with apartment management that the unit should be vacant, officers noted that lights were visible inside the apartment. Despite management’s confirmation, officers decided to enter the apartment to ensure there were no victims inside. Upon entry, they encountered individuals who were confused but safe. After explaining the situation, the residents cooperated, understanding the necessity of the officers’ actions.

Later in the morning, it was discovered that the calls had been part of a hoax orchestrated by the same individual, who made additional false reports, including another call to a crisis hotline, falsely claiming a murder at the same address.

The Carrollton Police Department emphasizes the seriousness of such incidents. While the calls were determined to be false, officers responded with urgency to ensure public safety. The decision to forcibly enter residences during these emergencies is a difficult but necessary one to protect lives.

Swatting incidents, where false reports are made to law enforcement, not only misuse emergency resources but also place innocent people at risk. The department is actively investigating the source of the calls and will pursue charges against those responsible for the dangerous hoax.
