Teen Arrested in Fatal Shooting of 16-Year-Old in Norcross
The Gwinnett County Police Department has arrested 17-year-old Jason Joel Ortiz of Norcross in connection with a fatal shooting on November 12, 2024, that claimed the life of 16-year-old Jose Yahir Batz.
Ortiz has been charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies. He is currently being held in the Gwinnett County Jail.
At approximately 4:00 p.m. on November 12, officers from the West Precinct responded to a person shot call at 2400 Windsor Woods Lane in unincorporated Norcross. Upon arrival, officers discovered Batz deceased, suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the incident stemmed from an altercation involving at least two males, which escalated to gunfire.
