Newton County Sheriff Addresses Claim By Former Employee, Calls it Misleading
Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown has issued a statement in response to misleading claims made by a Newton County Sheriff’s Office employee. Sheriff Brown emphasized the office’s commitment to transparency and truthfulness with the community.
Regarding the issue of surveillance cameras in the Newton County Detention Center, Sheriff Brown clarified that while the cameras were briefly out of operation due to technical issues, they are now functioning properly. The Sheriff reaffirmed that the safety and security of both Detention Officers and inmates remain a top priority.
Sheriff Brown also addressed concerns about 37 use-of-force reports filed between May 1, 2024, and August 23, 2024. He explained that “use of force” refers to instances where residents may have been restrained for their safety and that of others, rather than implying physical injury. The Detention Center has managed over 1,300 residents from various agencies, including the City of Covington, Porterdale, Oxford, Georgia State Patrol, and others. Some residents required restraint due to intoxication or mental illness.
The Sheriff assured the public that no laws, policies, or human rights have been violated and that the staff follows strict standards to maintain the dignity and rights of all residents. He highlighted the office’s dedication to safety, transparency, and open communication. Staff and community members can use various platforms such as GroupMe, AIC, Eagle, or communicate directly with the Sheriff through scheduled appointments or written correspondence.
Sheriff Brown reaffirmed the Office of the Sheriff’s commitment to high standards and stated that misinformation will not compromise the trust and confidence of the community.
