Body Found in Columbus Retention Pond Leads to Arrests, Suspects Aged 9 to 17

On May 29, 2024, at 2:22 p.m., Columbus Police officers responded to a report of a body discovered floating in a retention pond near the fields behind Howe Avenue at the dead end of Ormand Drive. Upon arrival, officers identified the deceased as Zahmere Greene, aged 15.

The Columbus Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit took charge of the investigation. Preliminary findings indicated that Greene had drowned on May 23, 2024, although the incident was not reported until six days later. Further inquiry revealed that multiple juveniles had witnessed the event.

As a result of the investigation, several charges have been filed:

  • An 11-year-old juvenile faces charges of Involuntary Manslaughter and Concealing the Death of Another.
  • Sane Sano, aged 17, is charged with Concealing the Death of Another, with the case transferred to Superior Court.
  • Four other juveniles, aged 9, 11, and 12, are also charged with Concealing the Death of Another.

Currently, the 11-year-old suspect is held at the Regional Youth Detention Center (RYDC), while Sano is detained at the Muscogee County Jail. The remaining juveniles were processed and released to their parents.

The Columbus Police Department stresses the importance of immediate reporting, urging parents to encourage their children to speak out when they witness troubling incidents. The community is reminded of the critical role of vigilance in preventing tragedies and ensuring safety.
