Suspect Identified and Arrested in April Fatal Shooting in Richmond County

On April 21, 2024, at approximately 10:47 pm, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of shots fired in the 300 block of Williamsburg Drive in Hephzibah, GA. Upon arrival, officers discovered Gregory Campbell, aged 24, from Grovetown, GA, who had sustained gunshot wounds. Campbell was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Following an investigation by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, a suspect was identified. On May 3, 2024, Bennelle Evans, aged 38, from Augusta, GA, was apprehended in McDuffie County. Evans faces charges including Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon, and Possession of Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the US Marshal’s Southeastern Task Force and the Georgia State Patrol for their assistance in Evans’ arrest. No further details have been disclosed at this time.
