Arrest Made in Midtown Atlanta Shooting; Case Reclassified as Justifiable Homicide
ATLANTA — A suspect has been taken into custody and another has surrendered in connection with a March 30 shooting that left one man dead and two others injured, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
Cortez Watkins, 24, was apprehended May 5 by the department’s Fugitive Unit at a Georgia Department of Community Supervision office. He is charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
A second individual, Erica Norwood, 33, turned herself in to the Fulton County Jail on May 4. She faces charges of two counts of possession of marijuana and tampering with evidence.
The charges stem from a shooting reported around 5:47 p.m. March 30 in the 230 block of 18th Street NW. Officers arrived to find three adult victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Two victims were transported to a hospital in stable condition, while a third male victim was taken in critical condition and later died.
Homicide investigators later reclassified the case as a “felon killed by private citizen,” indicating the fatal shooting may have been justified under the circumstances.
Authorities said both Watkins and Norwood were identified during the ongoing investigation, leading to the issuance of arrest warrants.
Police emphasized that all individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The investigation remains ongoing.
