Clayton County Man Sentenced to 60 Years in Sexual Assault Case
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Clayton County jury has convicted a man of aggravated sexual battery and false imprisonment in a case stemming from a 2020 assault in Riverdale, according to District Attorney Tasha M. Mosley.
Shymik Mewborn was found guilty after jurors heard evidence related to a June 28, 2020 incident in which the victim reported being sexually assaulted at a residence following a party.
According to testimony, officers responded to a rape investigation after the victim called 911 from a nearby gas station. She told investigators she became ill after consuming alcohol and went to a bedroom to rest, where Mewborn entered and assaulted her while holding her against her will. She was able to escape and seek help.
Investigators later identified Mewborn through social media, and he was located in the Fulton County Jail, where he was being held on an unrelated murder warrant at the time.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for DNA evidence and interviewed Mewborn after advising him of his rights. Authorities said he admitted to being at the residence and having contact with the victim.
After a brief deliberation, the jury returned guilty verdicts on both charges.
Chief Assistant District Attorneys Jamal Williams and Zina Pitts prosecuted the case, with assistance from investigators and victim advocacy staff.
Superior Court Judge Shana R. Malone sentenced Mewborn to 60 years in prison, followed by life on probation. The court noted he is not eligible for parole.
Mosley said the conviction holds the defendant accountable and offers some measure of closure for the victim.
