Macon Transit Authority Expands Rapid Transit, Adds Electric Buses and Votes to End Route 2
MACON, Ga. — The Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority addressed service growth, fleet upgrades and route changes during its April board meeting, officials said.
Rapid Transit, the agency’s shared ride service, continues to expand in South Bibb County, known as Zone 2, which includes Houston Avenue and the Middle Georgia Regional Airport. The service is currently operating in Zones 1 and 2, with Zone 1 covering expanded downtown areas.
Officials also announced the addition of three new 30-foot electric buses in April, bringing the total to six since December 2025. An additional five buses of the same size are expected to arrive, further modernizing the fleet with smaller, more efficient vehicles.
The Georgia Department of Transportation conducted two reviews of the agency in April, including a drug and alcohol audit on April 16 and a bus fleet inspection on April 23.
Board members also approved the discontinuation of Route 2, which serves the North Napier and Zebulon Road area, effective June 1, 2026. The decision followed more than a month of public notice offering an opportunity for a hearing, during which no requests were made.
“Route 2 is underutilized and there will be considerable savings discontinuing it,” MBCTA CEO Craig Ross said.
The agency was also recognized for its role in developing the Spirit of Macon Park, receiving the 2026 Innovation Award from the Macon-Bibb Earth Day Committee. MBCTA Public Information Officer Jami Gaudet also received a separate recognition from Parks and Beautification for contributions to the project.
