Deputy Shoots Man After Confrontation Near Elementary School in Conyers
CONYERS, Ga. — A Rockdale County deputy shot and wounded a man Monday morning following a confrontation near an elementary school, authorities said.
Deputies with the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office responded around 10:37 a.m. on April 13, 2026, to a report of indecent exposure near Peeks Chapel Elementary School.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Jason Marshall-Haynes, left the school area and was later located by a deputy on Benji Boulevard. Authorities said Marshall-Haynes was nearly nude when he was encountered.
According to investigators, Marshall-Haynes advanced toward the deputy, who first attempted to subdue him using OC spray and a Taser, both of which were ineffective. The suspect refused to comply with repeated verbal commands.
The deputy then discharged his firearm, striking Marshall-Haynes. A second deputy arrived and deployed a Taser, and both deputies were ultimately able to take him into custody.
Marshall-Haynes was transported to a local hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office released a statement following the incident:
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected, including the individual involved and their recovery, our deputy as they deal with the weight of the situation, and the members of our community who may be impacted by this incident. We recognize that situations like this can be unsettling and raise many questions. Please know that we are committed to transparency, accountability, and a thorough review of what occurred.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to conduct an independent review of the shooting, which is standard protocol. The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
“Law enforcement officers are sometimes required to make critical decisions and those decisions carry lasting impacts. We ask for patience and understanding as the investigation moves forward. The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to serve this community with the highest level of safety, professionalism, and integrity,” said Sheriff Eric J. Levett.
The investigation remains ongoing.
