1976 Seminole County John Doe Has Been Identified Through DNA
SEMINOLE COUNTY, Georgia – Authorities have identified human remains discovered nearly 50 years ago in Seminole County using advanced DNA technology.

On March 17, 2026, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced that skeletal remains found in December 1976 have been identified as Curtis Lee Jones. His family was notified of the identification in February.
The remains were originally discovered on December 28, 1976, when hunters found the body in a remote area near the Chattahoochee River. Despite an extensive investigation at the time, the man’s identity remained unknown, and the case became known as “Seminole County John Doe.”
In 2024, the GBI’s Regional Investigative Office in Thomasville and the Cold Case Unit partnered with a forensic laboratory to apply advanced DNA testing and genealogical analysis. The effort produced investigative leads that ultimately led to Jones’ identification, with assistance from his relatives.
As part of that process, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Cold Case Unit submitted forensic evidence to Othram Inc. in The Woodlands, Texas, to determine if advanced DNA testing could help identify the man. Scientists were able to develop a DNA extract and use forensic-grade genome sequencing to build a comprehensive DNA profile suitable for genealogical research.
That profile was returned to investigators, allowing them to conduct a genealogical search that generated new leads and helped narrow down the man’s identity. A reference DNA sample from a potential relative was later compared to the profile using rapid relationship testing, which ultimately confirmed the identification as Curtis Lee Jones.
Officials said the cause of death remains undetermined.
