Suspect in Augusta Arson Arrested After Witnesses Report His Confession

AUGUSTA, Ga.—A man has been arrested and charged with arson after witnesses at a large fire on Thursday morning told deputies that he confessed to starting the blaze.

The incident occurred on September 18 at an abandoned building at 12th and Broad Street. While deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office were managing traffic, witnesses approached them and reported that a man, identified as Cameron Perkins, had admitted to lighting the building on fire and said he planned to return to do it again the next day.

Deputies located Perkins nearby on Broad Street. When he saw them, he fled on foot, leading to a brief chase. Sergeant Ryan Digiacomo pursued him and deployed his Taser, which struck Perkins in the back and caused him to surrender. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Perkins faces charges of:

  • Arson 1st Degree
  • Criminal Damage 2nd Degree
  • Terroristic Threats
  • Impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Obstruction

“We are grateful when citizens step up to help us problem solve and make Augusta better for everyone,” said Sheriff Eugene Brantley. He added that the quick apprehension by his deputies likely prevented additional criminal acts.

The investigation is ongoing.
