Savannah Man Gets 8+ Years in Prison After Shooting Roommate

SAVANNAH, GA – A Savannah man has been sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison for illegally possessing ammunition following a 2023 shooting that left his roommate injured.
Charles Harmon Porter, 54, was sentenced to 100 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, U.S. Attorney Margaret E. Heap announced.
According to court documents, on May 29, 2023, Porter shot his female roommate during a domestic dispute at their Alma Street residence and fled the scene. Savannah Police quickly identified him as the suspect, arrested him within hours, and found a single round of ammunition in his pocket during booking. Because the round was manufactured outside Georgia, Porter’s possession constituted a federal crime.
At sentencing, prosecutors argued—and the court agreed—that Porter’s possession of the ammunition was directly connected to the shooting, amounting to attempted murder.
“The sentencing of Charles Harmon Porter reaffirms that this office will vigorously prosecute violent criminals who illegally possess firearms or ammunition down to the very last bullet,” said U.S. Attorney Heap. “We wish the victim the best in her continued recovery.”
The case was investigated by the ATF and Savannah Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy P. Dean. A related state charge of aggravated assault remains pending in Chatham County Superior Court.
