A Lawrenceville couple will serve 15 years in prison for shooting into the vehicle of the brother of an ex-girlfriend in September 2021.

Elijah Malik Hyams, 32, and Kyla Aolani Milling, 32, were found guilty of two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of terroristic threats, first-degree and second-degree felony criminal damage to property, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The incident occurred on September 7, 2021, when Hyams and Milling arrived at the Lawrenceville home of Hyams’ ex-girlfriend. Shots were fired into a car parked in front of the house, where her brother and his girlfriend were sitting. The gunfire shattered the rear window, struck the brother’s phone, and hit the front windshield. Neither occupant was injured.

Prior to the shooting, Hyams and Milling had sent threatening messages to the ex-girlfriend and her family. Police obtained recordings of Hyams threatening the victims and of Milling admitting she pulled the trigger after the shooting. Hyams initially claimed he fired into the air to break up a fight, but his statements were inconsistent.

District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson emphasized the danger posed by the defendants, stating, “The defendants could have killed or seriously injured someone. It is a blessing that the victims were unharmed.”

The jury returned guilty verdicts in under an hour. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Gaby Benghiat and Paul Barnhill, with assistance from investigators and the Lawrenceville Police Department.
