Albany Mother and Grandfather Charged After Leaving Three Young Autistic Children Unsupervised

On Sunday, April 20, 2025, Albany Police officers responded to a call in the 1800 block of W Broad Ave regarding a juvenile alone on the roadway around 8:00 P.M. Upon investigation, officers discovered two additional unsupervised juveniles inside a nearby residence in the same block.
Investigators determined that three children, ages 8, 4, and 9 months old, all of whom are autistic and non-verbal, had been left alone at home without adult supervision. The children’s mother, 25-year-old Amia Elder, and their grandfather, 66-year-old Kenneth Elder, arrived at the scene later.
Following further investigation, both Amia Elder and Kenneth Elder were charged with three counts of Reckless Conduct. Authorities confirmed that none of the children were harmed.
