Delta Airlines Offers Unique Sky View of Total Solar Eclipse on Special Flight
Delta Airlines is offering a unique opportunity for enthusiasts to witness a total solar eclipse from the sky this April. On April 8, 2024, Delta will operate a special flight, Delta 1218, from Austin to Detroit, tailored for umbraphiles seeking an unforgettable experience within the path of totality.
The flight, set to depart from Austin at 12:15 p.m. CT and arrive in Detroit at 4:20 p.m. ET, will be operated on an A220-300 aircraft known for its large windows, ensuring premium viewing opportunities for passengers.
Eric Beck, Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning at Delta, highlighted the collaboration behind the unique flight, stating, “Thanks to teams across the company, the idea of viewing a total eclipse from the air will become a reality for our customers.”
In addition to the special flight, Delta will offer prime eclipse-viewing opportunities on five other routes on April 8. Passengers on these flights are advised to bring protective viewing glasses. These routes include:
- DL 5699, DTW-HPN, departing at 2:59 pm EST on an ERJ-175
- DL 924, LAX-DFW, departing at 8:40 am PST on an A320
- DL 2869, LAX-SAT, departing at 9:00 am PST on an A319
- DL 1001, SLC-SAT, departing at 10:08 am MST on an A220-300
- DL 1683, SLC-AUS, departing at 9:55 am MST on an A320
For those preferring to witness the eclipse from the ground, Delta flies to various destinations within the path of totality, including AUS, San Antonio (SAT), and Little Rock, Ark. (LIT).
Warren Weston, Delta Air Lines Lead Meteorologist, emphasized the significance of the April 8 eclipse, stating, “This eclipse will last more than twice as long as the one that occurred in 2017, and the path is nearly twice as wide.”
