Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Kicks Off Centennial Celebration as World’s Busiest for Over Two Decades

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) officially launched its year-and-a-half-long centennial celebration today with an energetic event in the Domestic Terminal Atrium. The ATL Centennial Press Experience brought together city leaders, all living past Atlanta mayors, members of the Hartsfield and Jackson families, Airport officials, celebrity ambassadors, and community stakeholders to commemorate a century of aviation leadership.
The celebration coincided with the announcement from Airports Council International (ACI) that ATL continues its reign as the world’s busiest airport, a title it has held for more than two decades. In 2024, ATL welcomed over 104.6 million passengers, solidifying its position as a major global gateway and economic engine.
The kickoff event featured a presentation of colors by Atlanta Fire Rescue and included speeches from Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, ATL’s Airport General Manager Ricky Smith, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, and other dignitaries. Airport General Manager Smith unveiled the Airport’s 18-month centennial campaign, which will encompass special events, community engagement initiatives, and legacy projects.
The program also included a video tribute honoring the Airport’s namesakes, former Atlanta Mayors William B. Hartsfield and Maynard H. Jackson, a ceremonial photo signing with past and present Atlanta mayors, the presentation of a Centennial time capsule, and the unveiling of an exclusive ATL mascot and ambassador, followed by a community pep rally.
“This celebration is a moment to honor the bold vision and leadership that made ATL the global hub it is today,” said ATL Airport General Manager Ricky Smith. “As we celebrate 100 years of history, we also embrace the next century of growth, innovation and global connection.”
The ATL Centennial Kickoff marks the first of numerous events planned throughout the centennial celebration, which will continue through September 2026 and will involve both public and internal initiatives recognizing ATL’s vital role in connecting people and driving progress.
