Atlanta Police Capture Fleeing Felon After Dramatic Chase Through Railyard
On November 2, 2024, officers with the Atlanta Police Department (APD) successfully apprehended a fleeing suspect after a dramatic foot chase through a railyard in the heart of the city. The incident began around 12:47 PM, when officers responded to reports of several vehicles being broken into near Ted Turner Drive NW and John Portman Boulevard NW.
During their initial investigation, officers reviewed surveillance footage, which revealed the suspects, driving a 2016 Chevy Silverado, breaking into multiple vehicles before fleeing the scene. A Be On the Look Out (BOLO) alert was issued for the suspect vehicle, and APD’s Aviation Unit (Phoenix) quickly took to the skies to assist in the search.
The vehicle, driven recklessly at high speeds, was spotted by Phoenix and pursued by ground officers. As the suspects noticed they were being followed, they abruptly stopped and fled on foot, running in separate directions. Phoenix maintained a visual on the driver, who ran into a nearby Norfolk Southern railyard.
Despite the challenging terrain of the railyard, officers remained persistent in their search. After navigating the labyrinth-like layout, they eventually located the suspect hiding behind a train. Upon seeing the officers, the suspect surrendered without resistance and was taken into custody.
The suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Vincent Steele, was found to be in possession of a stolen vehicle, which had been reported missing in Atlanta on October 28, 2024. Steele was charged with two counts of entering an automobile with the intent to commit theft, three counts of theft by taking, and two counts of criminal trespass/damage to property. He was transported to the Fulton County Jail for processing.
The second suspect remains unidentified, and the investigation continues.
