Liberty County Woman Sentenced to 16 Months for Attacking Medical Professionals at Fort Stewart
A Liberty County woman has been sentenced to federal prison following her conviction for attacking medical professionals at Fort Stewart.
Christie F. Oxendine, 35, of Hinesville, Ga., received a 16-month prison sentence after being found guilty of Obstructing and Hindering Emergency Professionals, as well as misdemeanor charges of simple battery and disorderly conduct, according to Jill E. Steinberg, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. U.S. District Court Chief Judge R. Stan Baker also imposed a three-year supervised release period following her prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
According to trial testimony, Oxendine brought her minor child to the Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart for medical treatment. Despite lacking medical training, she demanded specific procedures be performed on her child, which were neither recommended nor standard care and potentially harmful. When medical staff refused and attempted to proceed with the appropriate treatment, Oxendine became verbally and physically abusive.
Oxendine unhooked her child from medical equipment and tried to leave the hospital. As staff intervened, she shoved a pregnant nurse and pushed another into a wall while shouting and using profane language. Military police later removed the child from Oxendine’s vehicle for continued care, and Oxendine was subsequently banned from the facility.
Oxendine was convicted on all counts after a two-day trial in April. She is required to report to a Bureau of Prisons facility by September 23.
The investigation was conducted by the Department of the Army Criminal Investigations Division and Military Police. The case was prosecuted by Southern District of Georgia Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew A. Josephson and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Z. Spitulnik.
