GBI Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting That Killed Americus Man

At the request of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Sumter County. A man was shot and killed in the incident, and no officers were injured.

Preliminary information indicates that 911 personnel received a call about Jamie Lynn Still, 45, of Americus, GA, who was barricaded in a house with a gun. The call reported that his family was inside the home and that shots had been fired. Deputies responded to a residence in the 1100 block of South Georgia Tech Parkway in Americus. They communicated with Still, but he refused to lower the rifle he was holding. When Still exited the house and pointed the rifle at deputies, one deputy fired at him, hitting him. Deputies then entered the home and found that no one inside was injured. Despite life-saving efforts, Still was pronounced dead at the scene.

Still’s body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation, and the case file will be submitted to the Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.

Details released by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office

At approximately 8:15 PM on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a domestic situation involving a male subject who was acting erratically and was intoxicated. The caller, who was inside the residence with three children, informed the E911 operator that the subject had a weapon and had been physically aggressive towards her. Despite this, the caller refused EMS assistance.

Deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene, and as they exited their patrol cars, the male subject appeared on the front porch, pointing a long rifle in their direction and firing shots. The deputies called for additional assistance, and the subject retreated into the house.

As more units arrived, attempts were made to contact the subject and persuade him to exit the residence without the weapon. However, the suspect emerged again with the weapon and fired additional shots. Deputies returned fire, and the suspect retreated back inside the residence.

During this time, deputies positioned at the rear of the residence successfully removed the complainant and the three children to safety through a window. After ensuring the safety of the innocent occupants, deputies entered the residence and found the subject lying on the floor. EMS arrived on scene and provided first aid, but the subject was found to be lifeless.
