Troup County Cold Case Victim Found in 1990 Identified Through DNA Investigation

TROUP COUNTY, Georgia – Human remains discovered along the shore of West Point Lake more than three decades ago have been identified through a renewed homicide investigation in Troup County, Georgia.

According to investigators, the body was discovered on March 11, 1990, in an advanced state of decomposition near West Point Lake. Authorities said evidence at the scene indicated the death appeared to be a homicide.

Investigators also recovered several personal belongings and faded tattoos, but despite efforts at the time, the victim remained unidentified for decades.

The case was reassigned in 2025 to Investigator Clay Bryant. Authorities said the remains, which had been held at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab, were submitted for additional DNA testing through a private laboratory.

A DNA profile was developed and forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which ultimately confirmed the victim’s identity as Craig Alexander Maddox, who was living in Arkansas at the time of his death.

Investigators said information obtained from family members has led authorities to continue investigating the case as a homicide.

Officials said no additional information is being released at this time.
