STONE MOUNTAIN, Georgia – A Gwinnett County police officer was killed and another remains hospitalized after a violent encounter with an armed suspect early Sunday morning at a hotel in unincorporated Gwinnett County.

According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, officers were dispatched around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 1st, to the Holiday Inn Express located at 1790 E. Park Place Boulevard in reference to a fraud investigation. Police were responding to a report that a credit card belonging to a South Carolina resident had been fraudulently used at the hotel.

Officers made contact with the front desk manager, who advised that the room connected to the fraudulent transaction was rented to 35-year-old Kevin Andrews of Decatur. When officers contacted Andrews at his room and learned he had an active warrant for Failure to Appear out of DeKalb County, they attempted to take him into custody.

Investigators say Andrews then pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking both officers. One officer returned fire, hitting Andrews. Additional officers rushed to the scene, and all three individuals were transported to a local hospital.

Police Officer Senior Pradeep Tamang, who joined the department in July 2024 and graduated from the 121st Police Academy in May 2025, later died from his injuries. Master Police Officer David M. Reed, a member of the department since September 2015 and a graduate of the 94th Police Academy, remains in critical but stable condition.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department and our community,” a Gwinnett County police spokesperson said. “Officer Tamang answered the call to serve and protect, and he paid the ultimate sacrifice doing so.”

The suspect, Andrews, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized. He will be transported to the Gwinnett County Jail once medically cleared.

At the request of Gwinnett County Police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has assumed control of the officer-involved shooting investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
